Toyota Tsusho sponsored construction of fertilizer plant in Kenya to start

Posted on : Monday, 7th September 2015

A US$ 1.2bn fertilizer plant in Kenya is set to be constructed in a move that will see the cost of the farm input reduce significantly.

The fertilizer plant in Kenya which received funding from the Kenyan Government and Toyota Tsusho East Africa through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) is expected to ease the manufacturing, distribution and supply of fertilizer.

“We expect the cost of production of fertilizer to reduce significantly upon completion of the local plant. It is estimated that 40 per cent of the cost of fertilizer is due to freight and port handling charges,” said the Vision 2030 Delivery Secretariat acting Director, Prof Gituro Wainaina.

The new fertilizer plant is also expected to be a solution to food insecurity which threatens an estimated 10 million Kenyans.

The project construction will be implemented in two phases, where the first phase will see construction of a Nitrogen Potassium Calcium (NPK) production plant, while the second phase will see Toyota construct a plant for the production of Diammonium Phosphate (DAP), urea and Calcium Ammonium Nitrogen (CAN) fertilizers – the first production for the latter is expected to be in 2016.

The fertilizer production plant is strategically located in Eldoret due to the immense agricultural activities that take place in the area.
